About ChannelBuddy

ChannelBuddy is a free, browser-based CPS — a codeplug editor for DMR radios. Edit channels, zones, scan lists, talk groups, DMR contacts and radio settings; import and export .rdt files; export CSVs; and read or write your radio directly over USB with no software to install.

It is in beta. Keep a backup of your radio, or of your original .rdt file, before writing anything.

Reading and writing over USB uses the Web Serial API: Chrome, Edge and Opera, and Firefox 151 or newer. Safari does not support it, but can still edit codeplugs and import or export files.

Account tiers and limits

ChannelBuddy is free to use. How many codeplugs you can keep depends on your WebCPS plan on aes.app, and the allowance is counted per radio model — an AT-D878UVII project does not consume your AT-D890UV allowance. Private and shared projects share one allowance; public ones have their own.

Tier Private / shared Public
Free 1 per model 3 per model
Basic 5 per model 10 per model
Advanced 100 per model 200 per model

Bought your AnyTone from AesApp? Existing customers get a free Basic licence for the model they purchased — it applies to that radio model, so if you bought more than one you get Basic on each. Nothing to claim: it follows your aes.app account.

Nothing is deleted if your plan changes — you simply cannot add more until you are back under the limit, and moving a project out of a full bucket is always allowed. Sign in to see your own tier.

Before you start

Other limitations

Converting a project to another radio

You can convert a project to any of the other models — every direction between the four AnyTone radios is supported. Converting always creates a new project and leaves the original untouched, so nothing you already have can be lost by trying it. Your channels, zones, scan lists, talk groups, receive groups, radio IDs and the great majority of your general settings carry across.

What each conversion cannot carry

What follows is what the target radio cannot represent. The conversion reports the same list back to you afterwards, for your specific project — this table is the general case, worked out from what each radio actually stores.

Three things never carry, whichever pair you pick, because ChannelBuddy does not model them on any radio: an imported DMR contact database (choose one again on the new project under Contact list source), the 2-Tone decode table (the 2-Tone encode list and the per-channel IDs do carry), and the basic numeric DMR encryption codes (your AES and ARC4 keys do carry). A handful of general settings can also be left behind where the two radios have no matching control, or spell its values differently enough that a match cannot be proven — the conversion counts those for you rather than guessing.

Formats we recognise but cannot open yet

If you upload one of these, ChannelBuddy will tell you exactly what it is rather than claiming the file is broken.

A note on the AT-D578UVII

ChannelBuddy targets the AT-D578UVII (the radio identifies itself as 578UV2). The earlier AT-D578UV is not supported. The two save codeplugs that are identical apart from a single byte recording which model was picked in the factory CPS, so a file cannot be told apart by inspection — what matters is the radio you are writing to.

Look up a setting across all four radios

The four factory CPS often use different names for the same setting — the D168UV's Call Tone is Talk Permit everywhere else, and its APRS Signal Path is the others' Digipeater Path. This table maps every setting we have verified across the four radios, ordered the way the CPS lays them out. An empty cell means that radio does not have the setting; a highlighted cell means it is named differently there. Captions are transcribed verbatim from each factory CPS's own dialogs (typos included).
